Alan Watts (Philosopher) Sketch: Think & Explore

Quote Posted on Updated on

A while back, I asked Mani @ Think & Explore to draw Alan Watts. He is a gifted artist and this is a perfect example. Go visit and see how he drew it. Thanks, Mani! ~Vic

Hi all, I am back with a new pencil sketch today! 😃 There’s a specialty for this one. Some time back, this picture (of Alan Watts) was requested by blogger The Hinoeuma (blog Cosmic Observation) as a suggestion to my next to draw list. I took the suggestion and worked on the sketch recently. […]

This is great. That is one of the many talents I don’t have…it’s a talent you have to work on if you have it…but you either have it or not…

Reminds me of the years and years of art classes my mother sent me to. I went thru three art teachers & one in public school. I loved art but, some of it I struggle with because I am so left-brained & so critical of my own work. Perfection is in the process, not the end product…more about the journey than the destination. I gripe about the completion & think of how I could have “done it better.” I CAN draw. I CAN paint. I just don’t.

Mani…from where I’m standing, shames me…on so many levels. I can sketch a tree but, do a face and have the actual resemblance come thru…no.

I wanna be a Rembrandt and I’m not. I’d settle for a Monet but, I’m too left-brained to be an impressionist.

Left-brained coders will hack art apart because we are always looking for “cleaner code”, ie, painting & re-painting or drawing & erasing, over & over.

I’m always looking for perfection in songwriting…it’s not going to happen. Sometimes you just have to let it go like it is. It’s funny some songs that I write that I think are terrible…others like…and the other way on the ones that I like. I’m sure artists feel the same way.

Since you can draw and paint you should try to let go and do it.

Sometimes when you try to make somethign perfect you will take all of the soul out of it. It can do more damage than good.

Back in the middle 90s, many, many years after my art classes from my mother, I met a guy that did the “Bob Ross” style paintings class. I did a lot of painting then. Gave them to family members. I gave two to my ex-Marine when we were dating. Heh. When he abandoned me in Texas, he left them behind. I was amused. I still have them.

Those classes were fun because Tommy was fun. I know I have natural talent…I just can’t let go enough and relax into it. That is also a product of growing up insecure. Without the early acceptance of parents, personal acceptance becomes difficult. How do you tell yourself that you are “good enough” when they didn’t?

That guy really was a jerk…not only you but also the paintings.

Playing music good or bad is my release…I get cranky if I don’t play for a while.

Yes you are right about the upbringing that makes complete sense.

Yeah. The Marine was an ass. I don’t hate him, tho. He came from a much worse family than I had. Now, he is just a memory & a topic of discussion.

Hm. Interesting. I have to sing. It just comes up & out. Creative release…❤

What ever blows your hair back and gets the tension out. The guys came over last weekend and I played and I felt drained at the end…a good kind of drained.
