Sad to see the squished snake. We are not very far from hibernation dens for red-sided garter snakes; an excellent snake to have around. Every May they emerge from hibernation, mate and leave, returning in September. Which means we suddenly have crushed snakes everywhere on the roads during those 2 months. It’s very hard to avoid them when driving, there are so many! The highways closest to the hibernation dens have mesh fences in the ditches that guide them into tunnels under the road. Between the cars and the crows, it’s a wonder we still have as many as we do!

Water snakes mostly, bull snakes there are rattlers and some other kinds, but the ones I see the most are water snakes

Yikes. I don’t like rattlers or water moccasins. I am unfamiliar with a bull snake.

They are huge snakes that eat lots of mice in the fields. Good snakes but a tad scary.

I have seen some rat snakes this year… I don’t mind the none harmful ones…unless they sneak in when Martha does.

Goodness! I can’t even imagine that…crushed snakes everywhere.
I don’t think I have ever seen a red-sided garter snake in this area.

Once I gathered my wits, I got lucky. They stood perfectly still for me.
The deer around here don’t even wait for the sun to set to come out. And, these two were in broad daylight…not even dusk.
