POTD: Tulips

Posted on

Pl@ntNet seems to think this is a Didier’s Tulip or Tulipa Gesneriana. There are so many tulip variations, it would be difficult to narrow down any particular one. There are lots of hybrids. They are all in the Liliaceae family. ~Vic

We can’t grow them in our yard. We are so close to the river, the deer always eat them. 😖🙄

I would grow them just to see the deer.

Around here, they are so used to people, they come out in broad daylight. We routinely have herds of them wandering through. Deer poop is good fertilizer. At the back corner of our lot, I have a compost pile. I don’t throw things like watermelon rinds or cantaloupe rinds in the trash. The deer & squirrels take care of that. And, I don’t have to worry about them messing with my onions & garlic.

Deer like Hosta, too…the green & white type. They won’t touch the green/yellow type.

We rarely see deer so it is like a treat for us.

That’s a shame. This is a small town with a rather large river running thru it (very old Native American trading path). There are a lot of natural areas, too…lots of wooded areas, much of which are owned by either UNC or Duke. Plenty of wildlife here.

Our corrupt Wildlife Commission released a slew of coyotes a few a years back…supposedly to control the deer. Oh THAT rec’d some big pushback. They didn’t tell anyone they were doing it. Then, they had to put out a press release to tell folks they could shoot the ‘Yotes on sight. They weren’t killing deer, they were killing cats, dogs, horses, mules, cows, pigs… What a mess.

Coyotes are a danger to outside cats. They should have known that. Plus, farm animals are a much easier prey. We live in a small town here in West Virginia but our house is close to the center of town We do see deer on the outskirts. Our Florida home is in a much more urban area. Sometimes we see deer in Florida but we have to travel at least ten miles away.

There had been complaints, over the years, of an exploding deer population. Why they decided to release a bunch of ‘Yotes and not tell anyone… That right there is a perfect example of how corrupt NC is.

Here in West Virginia there are a bunch of personal would be willing to help with your deer overpopulation. My neighbor said high school kids would hunt before school and then go straight to school with their guns in their vehicles.

I grew up with folks like that. My hometown was small when I was growing up. I went to high school with guys that had rifles in their trucks and an ex-hubby was a hunter.

My dad hunted once or twice a year but I was never interested in going with him.

I went with my ex several times. I’ve never hunted, myself, preferring weapons for self-defense, only.
