I get lucky sometimes. This town can have gorgeous sunsets and wild cloud formations. This geographical area sits in an odd position, butting up against a very small mountain range called Thunder Ridge (with Occaneechi Mountain) and, to the East, the Piedmont Plateau drop off. Anyone who has ever driven I-85 knows where the drop off is…because, driving West, you have to climb. I’ve actually witnessed storms parting this area on radar because of the Ridge. We can get some spectacular formations: https://cosmic-observation.com/2020/04/19/snapshots-sunday-sky-gazing-4-0/
It does! Interesting you mention that. We were watching the re-visit of Mount St. Helens last night on The Smithsonian Channel. There was a WWI veteran living near the blast and they never found him…or his house. They found a photographer, that was there to snap pictures of the eruption…in his car, full of ashes.
Interesting! I hadn’t heard about that guy. He wasn’t covered in the Smithsonian episode. They covered the other photographer, lumberjacks, the veteran and a couple that was camping.

It’s probably why the Native Americans chose this area as a large trading path…that and the Eno River.

Been home in Maryland, catching up on everything and everyone. We’ll be heading midwest in our motorhome the end of this month for the summer.

It was, indeed. We get these stunning displays sometimes. I remarked, above, to another commenter with links to more shots I’ve posted in the past.

This guy didn’t have a motorcycle. He was driving a station wagon:
