NOTD: Dr. Deep Resurfaces

A university professor, who spent 100 days living underwater at a Florida Keys lodge for scuba divers, resurfaced Friday and raised his face to the sun for the first time since March 1. Dr. Joseph Dituri set a new record for the longest time living underwater without depressurization during his stay at Jules’ Undersea Lodge, submerged beneath 30 feet of water […] in a Key Largo lagoon. The diving explorer and medical researcher shattered the previous mark […] set by two Tennessee professors at the same lodge in 2014. Dituri, who also goes by the moniker “Dr. Deep Sea“, is a University of South Florida educator who holds a doctorate in biomedical engineering and is a retired U.S. Naval officer.
Guinness World Records listed Dituri as the record holder on its website after his 74th day underwater last month. Dituri’s undertaking, dubbed Project Neptune 100, was organized by [The Marine Resources Development Foundation]. Unlike a submarine, which uses technology to keep the inside pressure about the same as at the surface, the lodge’s interior is set to match the higher pressure found underwater. The project aimed to learn more about how the human body, and mind, respond to extended exposure to extreme pressure [in] an isolated environment. [It] was designed to benefit ocean researchers and astronauts on future long-term missions.

It’s truly remarkable what some people will do to make it into Guinness Book of World Records!

I agree. The post I did about the guy that liked to bite drink cans, comes to mind.
June 12, 2023 at 6:40 PM
Right, I remember that. Maybe he was inspired by Jaws from the 007 picture “Moonraker”! 🙂
June 12, 2023 at 9:58 PM
Possibly…LOL!

Fascinating, who knew?! I had no idea such a facility existed! Can’t imagine wanting to spend 5 minutes experiencing it, so WOW again! Thank heavens there are those who choose to do such things and report back, eh?!

I certainly didn’t know. I like water but, I wouldn’t want to stay under that long. His biomedical engineering degree scares me, particularly after what we have been through over the last three years. I’m getting a hint of trans-humanism…and some pride. He wanted to be in Guinness.

They like to make a good spectacle of these types, to ensure there will be copycatters.

I read this the day you posted it and read more about him. So he goes into an underwater shelter…I looked for pics of it inside…but couldn’t find anything. Wouldn’t this be like being in a submarine?
June 19, 2023 at 5:00 PM
Submarines are pressurized to mimic living on land. He stayed in…something…that mimicked the water pressure. His body adjusted, I guess and there was no need to depresserize.
I know you have seen The Abyss. Plus, submariners in the Navy have to go thru depressurization after a lot of time in deep sea.
What I want to know is, how did he eat, sleep & poop?
June 19, 2023 at 6:58 PM
Yea…that makes sense to make it different. I think I would like that. I dont’ have to have the sun…I’m a night person…so yea it would bother me after a while but not for a while.
June 19, 2023 at 9:23 PM
I am definitely not a morning person. I think I was born in the wrong time zone. I prefer nighttime. That’s why we text in the wee hours of the morning.
The underwater thing…IDK. I like swimming but, I don’t think staying underwater that long would be good for my psyche
June 19, 2023 at 10:25 PM
Oh I like the night time also…now I didn’t like working night shift for some reason but I like seeing the moon over the sun!
I truly believe it wouldn’t bother me.
June 20, 2023 at 1:57 PM
Night shift is opposite of body rhythm. That is tough.
You could always volunteer at that lodge…🤔😉
June 20, 2023 at 2:00 PM
No…I’ll stay where I am right now… Yea I never felt right working through the night although I love it.
June 20, 2023 at 2:18 PM
Ken loved 3rd shift as a cop. He has returned to that pattern when he finally stopped working in late 2018. Hard for me to sleep with a blaring TV at 3am…🥴😵😵💫☹️😖🥱😴😠👻
June 20, 2023 at 2:24 PM
LOL… you need to get him a headset then…I like it loud also that late when I watch.
June 20, 2023 at 2:26 PM
Well, he is hard of hearing…tinnitus from being on board ship in the Navy. The firing range as a cop didn’t help. He refuses to get hearing aids.
June 20, 2023 at 6:26 PM
Well…all the more for a headset. I’m hard of hearing also…not for a noble cause like him…but becasuse of Ampeg amps blasting
June 20, 2023 at 11:20 PM
Well, I have some of that, too…a bit to close to band speakers. I’ve walked away from AC/DC deaf as a post.

My ears are shot…I can’t talk on my iphone without headphones…I have to have stereo before I can hear.
