Well, shoot, I thought this would only be about Tesla. Hahaha… NO!
Gee, you’d think people would actually do some research about these vehicles and cold climates before deciding.

I want one (but probably won’t ever get one), AND I don’t live in one of those cold states. I wouldn’t use it for long-distance travel either.

But AGAIN, this isn’t a Tesla issue. It is every electric vehicle issue.

Eh. Sorry. Tesla, the man, is fascinating. This video is tongue-in-cheek for me, with eye rolls to go with it.

I well remember a decade, ago, that the hybrids didn’t do well in cold weather, even with gas. I am a former driver’s license examiner and I didn’t like giving road tests in them.

Ever read about the electric Ford pickups that didn’t have much pulling power or distance? The claim was 700/800 miles on a single charge. Not even close…

I agree with you. ALL electric cars are terribly dangerous. Don’t get me started on water damage & spontaneous explosions…or battery radiation.

Imagine if Henry Ford had the formal education, AND Big-Daddy-Oil hadn’t stepped in.
Imagine how far the technology would have advanced if the electric vehicle had been continuously worked on.
But also, the claim of 700/800 mile range should have been laughable. Quality constructed roads – well… did such things exist?
Anyone that needed to travel that far shouldn’t trust such new tech anyway.

Honestly, I was interested in the two guys that invented water powered vehicles…and subsequently disappeared.

That was also an interesting technological idea.
I can imagine the cost of water skyrocketing over that resource, as the technology developed.
Every new “power source” has its pros AND cons.

That’s certainly less than favorable PR for Tesla. The think the key issue here aren’t the vehicles but the lack of the company’s response.

When you have such brutal temperatures, many other (non-electric) cars can give up as well, especially diesel vehicles.

In my area you see many Teslas. I think it’s also a matter of further improving battery technology and the infrastructure to charge these vehicles – and to make them more affordable for the average car owner!

Unfavorable PR for all electric cars. They do not do well in cold weather…driving or charging. Like I told Kenneth, above, I remember a decade, ago, hybrids having trouble with cold temps. They were big out west and there were so many reports of stranded folks because they would not start…even with gas. Some people froze to death.

Diesels are a little different. They are the ones that truck supplies around frozen Canada & up into Alaska. It is true that, when off, they have to have an engine warmer. I had a neighbor that owned a diesel Excursion. I was living in TX but, it would, occasionally get really cold. He’d heat it up before taking off. At truck stops, those big rigs just stay on. Any big rig that shuts down during extreme cold already had an underlying problem…bad engine, water in the diesel, screwed transmission, electrical problems…which adds up to poor maintenance.

Oh, my small town is covered in Teslas and all manner of fully electric vehicles. They sound so weird. They easily charge, here (mostly warm climate), as the town hooked the chargers into the grid. No diesel generators needed (HA!). And, more infrastructure for charging won’t make electric cars work in cold temps. Improving battery technology will be an uphill battle. There is only so much lithium on the planet. Don’t even get me started on them getting wet from flooding and, then, exploding…or the radiation they give off.

They will never be affordable. Once the battery goes bad, assuming you get to drive it that long, battery replacements are nearly as expensive as the initial purchase…and they take a while to get them, if you get one at all.

No, thank you. I will hang onto my Nissan Frontier with my teeth & fingernails.

I have a Leaf. It is my second and I love it. My wife has a Tesla, and she loves her car. We live in Florida and never have to worry about cold issues.

Warm weather is very helpful. Frozen precipitation & floods…not so much.

      What is a Leaf?

A Leaf is Nissan’s first electric car. I think it came out in 2012. I had a 2015 and now have a 2022.

The only one I would get is a Leaf or a small one to go around town…but I would not have one for my main car…I would rather have one with gas though.

The biggest thing to me is…ok…you are on the interstate in a huge traffic jam on the cusp of running out of battery life…you are screwed. On a cold or hot day you would be using the batter for a heater or AC…

I hit a pothole today at lunch…my battery messed up…well it was the voltage regulator on the alternator that got stuck…my friend came by and helped me get it going…it’s fine.

Yes…after Greg hit the alternator with a metal rod…it was fine. The pothole I hit made the voltage regulator stick…I never had that before.

So, I know first hand of this “problem” – my boss lived in Winnetka, IL – where Home Alone is filmed. So happy with his Tesla he bought during the summer and would drive it down to the office (3 hrs south) once a week. IL winter came and he couldn’t even make it half way down – had to stop at a McDonalds to charge it up enough to make it down and then park it for the day at a nearby Holiday Inn that had chargers and walk 2 blocks to the office. Laughed my ass off every time.
