They won’t grow, naturally, in Central Texas, either. Too alkaline. They have to be put in raised beds & babied with acidic soil. There are a lot of Azaleas on the campus of U of T Longhorns but, they are kept in special beds.
I learned all that the hard way. Lost four beauties in my own yard before getting a local garden shop owner to admit they were hard to grow there.
In this area, the Piedmont/Triangle of NC, Azaleas are all over the place. In moving away, it never occurred to me that Azaleas didn’t grow everywhere. 🙄😑

They are gorgeous this year. I guess it’s all the rain we’ve gotten.
