POTD: Yard Art

Posted on Updated on

I guess it is yard art. It’s not close to the road for pick-up. And, why a pumpkin is underneath a chair in February…I don’t know. ~Vic

Me thinks I would haul it away. Maybe they will plant in it come spring.

Actually, at this point, it is just a toilet in the yard. Lift the lid, put in a potted plant, and let some weeds grow around the base…then you have yard art fit for the local trailer park!

It’s gone. You and Linda, above, had the same idea. It would have made an interesting planter. The guy that owns the house is a bit on the weird side, anyway. If it had stayed there too long, the town would have gotten involved and fined him.

oh…I was not thinking it would make a great planter. It should not be in the yard at all. I guess the point I was making (and I missed) was that he was turning his front yard into a cheap trailer park scene.

Like I said, he is a weird dude, anyway. The inside of his house is completely fucked up (according to my SO, that has been here for 23 years) and his vehicles have Hitlery & Odammit bumper stickers all over the backs of them.

          You make a fair point.

lol.. Bailey brought home a toilet a few years ago…said we should put flowers in it. A Franchisee that he was helping out gave him the object and the idea…I could have choked both of them

It’s gone, now. I suspect the town was not happy about it.

Sorry, Vic – I thought that was what you were alluding to with the label Yard Art.
In 1917 at the New York Armory Show Marcel Duchamp entered a urinal as a work of art. It caused great controversy – as it probably would now. (like the toilet bowl in your photo)
By doing so he addressed the evergreen question: ‘What is Art’. His contention was that if an artist (and he was an artist in the conventional sense at that time) says that a piece is a work of art – then that is what it is – a work of art.
This was a seminal moment and sparked conceptial art amongst other things.
He signed the urinal R Mutt.
He failed to get the exhibit into the main exhibition even though he was on the selection committee.
If you want to understand what modern art is about it is worth reading up on this. It certainly allows you to enter the mindset of many artists – whether you agree with them or not.

Whoa. I had no idea. I will look it up. Thanks for some history. I am a victim of American education. A rather large portion of us are ignorant, on so many levels.

          Happy Thanksgiving, Graham.

Everyone has blindspots. It’s just that I studied art for a while.
Thanks for the good wishes, Vic. We dont do Thanksgiving here. Harvest festival, in September, is about as close as we get, but it has nowhere near the impact as Thanksgiving in the US/Canada.
So I’ll wish you a Happy Thanksgiving – you must be half way through it by now. Still time to up the tempo.

Now, I need to look up Harvest Festival. facepalm
