Forty years ago, today, the very first American Movie Awards was televised on NBC. Filmed at the Wilshire Theatre, the ceremony honored film, actors, directors, screenwriters, music, favorites and a special recognition. Co-hosts were David Frost (also Executive Producer) and Dudley Moore with Angie Dickinson as Co-Hostess. Susan Anton was a performer. Judging by what few images I could find, the trophy was designed to resemble the Empire State Building.

Presenters were:

Peter Falk, Anthony Franciosa, William Holden, Christopher Lee, Jack Lemmon, Rita Moreno, Ricky Schroder, Suzanne Somers, Donna Summer and Donald Sutherland.

♦ Best Film: Rocky II

♦ Best Actress: Sally Field (Norma Rae)
♦ Best Supporting Actor: Robert Duvall (Apocalypse Now)
♦ Best Supporting Actress: Meryl Streep (The Deer Hunter)
♦ Best Director: Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter)
♦ Best Screenplay: The China Syndrome
♦ Best Original Song: Every Which Way But Loose (Every Which Way But Loose)
♦ Favorite Film Star-Female: Jane Fonda
♦ Favorite Film Star-Male: Burt Reynolds
Special Marquee: Clint Eastwood (Distinguished and Continuing Career)

There was another ceremony in March 1982 at a different location and a relaunch in 2013 with ceremonies in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 focusing mainly on Independent Film. I doubt there will be anymore ceremonies as the website was taken down last year. There are no videos of the event on YouTube, either.

Got to say how did Rocky II get best picture with the Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now in the field. Maybe it’s just me.

Well, considering that it only lasted for two non-consecutive years and disappeared for 30+ years, returning in an odd format before disappearing again, it was poorly conceived. Besides, the Hollyweird crowd looks for any reason to pat each other on the back, self-aggrandize, spend money, party and tell us how bad we are. 🙄

I wonder why they stopped having it? It’s odd that no clips are around of the event…they had to film it.

Ah Suzanne Somers. When she appeared in Playboy us boys hit up older brothers of friends and finally got our hands on that piece of gold…it was our holy grail at the time.

I commented, above, to Gary that (I think) it was poorly conceived. Besides, they’ll look for any reason to party & schmooze. Read this mess:

What other field of opportunity/career/labor has THAT many ways to back-pat?

That was back when Playboy had some class. Not many of today’s starlets would do that, now, in the age of #metoo & #wokeness.

Yea there are way too many. I can’t believe all of these exist.
Oh no not now…now we wait for their phones to get hacked and get worse pictures lol.

When you’re in the public eye and wanna be famous, there are “fans” that will “help” you out! LOL!

Sure. Celebrity is an addiction, just like alcohol. I still haven’t figured out how the Kardashians became popular. Robert the attorney is dead. Bruce is a woman, now. Kim married Kanye, so, I kinda get her…though most rappers wives you rarely see.

          Why are they still around?

I have yet to get the Kardashians either…famous for being famous. Another one…I won’t bother to look up…oh…Paris Hilton…why? Just why? I’ve seen much prettier women in hole in the wall bars.

I don’t get her, either. Hilton heir but…just…nothing… She’s not ugly. She doesn’t appear to be mean. She can’t act. Saw her on Supernatural.

She is just famous for being famous… She is not ugly no…but not what I call a great beauty whatsoever. I just don’t get it.
