Shutterbug Saturday: Dunnagan Trail Loop

This is a re-post from March 2019. I needed to update. I didn’t have any watermarks on my work. Part two will be later. ~Vic

Oh! So pretty! Your cemeteries are much, much, much older than ours. It is fun to read the stones

Most of the really old cemeteries are on the East Coast. In this area, UNC Chapel Hill has had student archaeologists digging in the area of the Native American sites. Natives didn’t use headstones. And, of course, my state is the one with the Lost Colony/Croatoan carved into the tree. On the flip side, there might be some really old cemeteries up in Alaska. I mean, we did purchase it from Russia and there are remnants of Russian/Siberian explorers.

Lulu: “Our Dada says they used to occasionally explore old cemeteries out in the woods or on back trails back in New York! Apparently the ones here in California don’t go back quite that far …”

Your Dada is right. Older cemeteries are on the East Coast. Native American graves are everywhere but, most aren’t marked, unless buried by others.

Parts look like the Blair Witch Project…in the dark areas.
Cool cemetery…if any are “cool”… but I’ve ran into a few in the middle of the woods. One of them from the 1800s…with an old old metal cable sticking out of the ground… which probably lowered the casket if I guess right.

I find old cemeteries fascinating and creepy, all at the same time.

It’s cool discovering them…especially those in the middle of nowhere.

I love that downed tree and that small wooden bridge brings me back to our local running trails.

We are surrounded by Duke University walking trails. We are on the “Mountains to the Sea” trail. There are so many neat places to go.
